5 Apps to Get You Through the Holidays
December 19, 2018 • 3 min read
The holidays are a time of cheer, joy and family…lots and lots of family. While spending so much time with our loved ones is something we all look forward to, we do know that it can begin to take its toll. All the parties, events, food and lack of personal space can quickly get quite taxing, with our mental health and wellbeing bearing the brunt of it. We’ve compiled a list of 5 apps to get you through the holidays this year, whether it be to find some moments of peace in the chaos, or to organize your life a little better.
Ps. Subscriptions or month-trials to these apps make some pretty great, zero-waste gifts!
1. Headspace: Learn to meditate and live mindfully
This app is growing quickly, and for good reason. With hundreds of themed sessions on a variety of topics ranging from stress to sleep to learning to focus and manage anxiety, this app has “my family is in town” all over it. These bite-sized guided meditations are perfect for busy schedules, allowing for a quick re-centering when you need it most. There are also emergency exercises that help users work through sudden meltdowns, so you can regroup after the turkey is burnt. This is one of the only apps that works on advancing the area of mindfulness mediation through research studies with different institutions, and the app has several published studies in mindfulness journals that demonstrate the impact that the app and mediation have had on its users.
Compatible with Android and iOS.

2. My Water: Monitor your water intake
The holidays are a party-heavy time where the mulled wine is flowing and the spirits high. It’s not uncommon to forget to drink enough water. The My Water app gives you the nudge you need to remind you to fulfill your daily water intake. The user inputs their determining factors to help the app know how much water you should be having. This includes things like lifestyle, height, weight, health status and the climate you live in. The app calculates your daily goal, and sends reminders when it’s time to drink more water, encouraging you to meet that goal. The feeling of accomplishing your goal is exciting (we live for instant gratification, don’t we?), so recording your daily intake is actually quite fun. Tea also counts as water intake, so you can record all your cups of Earl Grey as well.
Compatible with Android and iOS
3. MyFitnessPal: Track your diet and keep yourself accountable
Along with the wine and alcohol come the Christmas cookies and heavy party food. This month is often a sugar and carb-overload, largely derailing any healthy eating habits we establish the rest of the year. While we completely believe in eating as much as you want, and allowing yourself to enjoy all the goodies without deprivation, we also know it can make us feel not so great. This app helps you keep a food diary to keep track of what you’re eating, and help you cut out any bad food habits you might be falling into. There is a feature that allows you to scan barcodes of foods at the grocery store and save meals and recipes for fast cooking (a necessity when things are so busy). You can also connect the app with other fitness/wellness apps like Fitbit or Apple Health.
Android and iOS
4. TeuxDeux: To-Do App
Things can really start to pile on this time of year, with deliverables for year end, events, and shopping all happening at the same time. This app has a simple, visual way to keep track of your to-do lists, automatically rolls over any unfinished tasks to the next day, and can easily move any tasks around for where you might want them. They will be checked off as they are completed, giving you a sense of accomplishment and ease. The app can also reschedule any recurring tasks for the days when you just couldn’t get to something, helping you ensure you remember to do everything eventually.

5. Hello Vino: Drinks and Wine
Speaking of wine, this app is perfect for wine lovers as well as wine newbies. It can be overwhelming choosing appropriate wine pairings to go with the meal you’re making for your holiday party. This app is simple, cutting out the overwhelm and confusion that some sommeliers and websites might provide. Hello Vino advises you on what to pair with meals, or makes suggestions based on the occasion. It will suggest specific bottles, so all you have to do is pick it up and serve. It’ll also help educate you for the future, making your wine pairings to come flawless and on point.
