4 Palm Oil-Free Natural Soap Brands

April 17, 2019  •   5 min read

One of the easiest ways to help reduce your environmental footprint is by buying bar soap over body washes or shower gels. These liquid cleansers most often come packed in a single-use plastic bottle, which can only be recycled once. Bar soap is most often packaged in paper, which can be recycled many times, elongating its lifecycle.

We’ve heard that some people aren’t big fans of bar soap as they report it dries out their skin and feels irritating. Most mainstream soap brands are full of chemicals and agents that strip away your natural oils and dry out your skin, instead of locking in moisture. Additionally, mass produced soap bars leave your skin feeling tight and dry because the natural glycerin that is formed is removed and put into other products!

When you opt for artisanal soaps that have been made with traditional recipes of pure oils and skin-enhancing ingredients, you will notice the difference immediately! I’ve been using bar soaps for a few years now and I will definitely not switch back to mainstream body wash! I love the way it feels on my skin and the fact that the ingredients are plant-based, non-toxic and natural. Some natural brands do still use palm oil in their production, so I was super excited when I found these brands that are 100% palm oil-free!

Here are 4 palm oil-free natural soap brands:

Fysha

HQ: UK + Greece

My Pick: Lavender and French Pink Clay Soap

Why They’re Amazing: This soap brand is based in the UK, making all-natural soaps with the most swoon-worthy scent profiles! Using ingredients like Extra Virgin Olive Oil that has been ethically cold-pressed in Greece, this brand believes in high-quality ingredients that complement the earth and our skin. “FYS” comes from the Greek word “fysis” meaning “nature”, and “HA” comes from the Greek word for “handmade”. Amina, the owner and founder was frustrated with synthetic liquid soaps and shower gels that stripped her skin of its natural oils, and that came in wasteful packaging. Unable to find what she was looking for, she decided to create it. Being married to a Grecian, Amina began to harness the antioxidant benefits of EVOO on her many trips to Greece.

Each bar of soap is made with cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Greece, using wooden spoons to mix together the ingredients and protect their vibrational qualities. Each bar of soap is handmade and cured for 60 days, then hand-stamped individually and hand-wrapped in plastic-free packaging that’s FSC Certified, recyclable and biodegradable. The bars are all 100% palm oil-free, vegan, cruelty-free and use only 100% plant oils and natural ingredients.

_______

Wild Lather

HQ: Boston, USA

My Pick: Milford Sound Soap

Why They’re Amazing: Developed by Liz and Conrad, Wild Lather was born on a flight back from New Zealand, which was the last destination on an 8-month soulful journey. Thinking about Liz’s hobby for soap making, the plastic bottles of liquid soap they lugged around on their travels, and the healing ingredients that come from our earth, Wild Lather began to take form somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. Liz and Conrad spent the summer researching, sourcing and testing a bar of soap that would cleanse while keeping the skin nourished and hydrated. By December they launched their gorgeous and unique triangle shaped soaps that are made using the time-honoured method of cold processing. The triangle shape represents a simple triangular breathing exercise: breathe in, hold, breathe out, helping to bring a sense of calm and mindfulness to our daily cleansing rituals.

All the soaps are made with ingredients that are organic, unrefined, wild-harvested and plant-based. Using five plant-based oils, Coconut, Olive, Rice Bran, Shea Butter and Castor, this brand is completely free of palm oil, which I love! The oils are then combined with skin-nourishing ingredients such as naturally occurring clays and solar-infused botanicals. They use their house-blend of steam-distilled essential oils to scent the soaps, and nothing else.

Bell Mountain Naturals

HQ: Austin, USA

My Pick: Santa Ynez Mini Gem Soap

Why They’re Amazing: Sarah founded Bell Mountain Naturals with a few core values: simple, natural, ethical and transparent honesty. Only using high-quality, natural ingredients, Bell Mountain Naturals is free of the fillers that mainstream brands use, such as parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, dyes and artificial fragrances. With a pledge to always be palm oil-free, Bell Mountain Naturals prides themselves on sourcing ethically and sustainably harvested raw ingredients. All their products are made with natural botanicals, mineral rich clays, plant-based oils and butters, and therapeutic-grade essential oils. This brand is cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny Certified, which we love! Their line of adorable little gem-shaped soaps is not only great for gifts or travel, but the fact that they won’t strip your skin or render it irritated is a win-win in our books. Their packaging is also recyclable, reusable or compostable, for a truly zero-waste experience.

 Apprenti Ôr’ganik

HQ: Montreal, Canada

My Pick: Herbal Soap Detox

Why They’re Amazing: This therapeutic body care line is handmade in Montreal using natural and organic ingredients. A one-woman show, Alexe had been making body products for her friends and family for 3 years in her kitchen. She started getting requests from other people for her products, and slowly, her passion transitioned into a business. Apprenti Ôr’ganik’s mission is to raise awareness against harmful chemicals and artificial components that exist in our everyday products, while promoting healthy and earth friendly living. Alexe finds that the beauty industry is toxic and very superficial, so it’s become her personal quest to get people to reconnect with nature and what’s real. By being aware of what we eat and put on our bodies, we slowly open a door to a healthier and happier version of ourselves.

All of Apprenti’s products are slow-made by hand, using “active” ingredients. With a belief that nature has so much to offer, this brand believes that it is important to reconnect our body and soul with it. Apprenti Ôr’ganik’s products are devoid of synthetic ingredients, parabens, phthalates, sodium laurel sulfate, petroleum and mineral oils. They only use natural ingredients, plant-based food grade oils, steam distilled therapeutic essential oils, and certified organic ingredients. The products are cruelty-free, don’t test on animals and are vegan.
